With the arrival of the new year, doubts and a certain nervousness return, especially that experienced by families due to the challenges their children will face in the coming months. A concern that is not such for the little ones, who return eager, especially, to meet their companions again. If your child passes this year from third to fourth grade, there are certain things that we detail below that you will be interested to know.
We are going to see point by point what are the main objectives that children will have to face during this new year.
1. An extension of the contents to be studied
In the case of the transition from third to fourth grade, the main change is experienced by children in their day-to-day life in the classroom and is mainly due to the expansion of content that will work during the course. This change is notable, but appropriate objectives are set for the age of the students (8-9 years), especially if they have maintained study and work habits as recommended by teachers.
2. An emotional maturation
In relation to the social and emotional sphere, children have matured, they are able to analyze their environment in greater detail and be more critical of what they consider unfair. They leave behind some attitudes of self-centeredness, the desire to be a protagonist and the constant calls for attention. On an emotional level, as long as they are given the opportunity to do so, they will tend to express what they feel, associate it with their day-to-day situations and will try to learn to manage those emotions.
In this sense, it is essential that teachers and families work hand in hand as partners in the comprehensive training of children. In addition to the academic section, which we will detail later, it is important to know the emotional situation they live or the changes they experience in this regard. At these ages, they begin to have more interest in taking care of their image, their appearance and they place a lot of value on what others think of them. Both teachers and families must work on aspects such as: self-esteem, personal worth, self-concept, individual strengths, etc. Much of their success during the course at all levels will depend on their moods, the level of confidence they have in themselves and their ability to cope with conflicts.
3. Development of effective study techniques
Regarding work, it is important to introduce study techniques that help and motivate them in order to acquire content in a competitive way. There are also two axes that can be key to their success as students: reading comprehension and the use of logic-mathematics. The first of them is applicable to any context and area of study and the second refers to a work on the world of science that invites reflection, create hypotheses, etc.
I remember my experience as a tutor in this course as the most positive. These are children who do not have childish attitudes but are not in that period of hormonal revolution that in some cases is difficult to manage. In general, this course is a great experience for children, as they assume greater responsibilities, mature by leaps and bounds and are shaping the character and personality that make up their individual identity.
In this new course, it could be said that there are three great keys: knowing how to be, knowing how to do and knowing how to think. In previous courses it is also approachable but it is in the fourth grade where we will do this great exercise of reflection on them:
- Know how to be
Acquire behaviors and attitudes typical of this age, assume a leading role in the learning process, be competitive with oneself, etc.
- Know to do
Have the intention to learn, concern to know what is new, adapt to the demands of a job done with perseverance and dedication, etc.
- Know how to think
Being able to organize ideas, raise debates, exchange impressions, argue proposals, think critically, etc.
In short, we could say that fourth grade is a vital course when it comes to acquiring all these skills and abilities and we can affirm that a large part of them are achieved through personal effort, always accompanying the children throughout the process and without leaving never put aside your emotions, worries and concerns, at all levels.
